You guys have done it again and knocked our virtual socks off with your entries!  As always, it was terribly hard to pick a shop but this month Jill of Whimsy Jill won the free critique.  You can follow along by checking out her site.

Things we loved about the site:

  • Great branding with the colors, patterns, and font.  It all screams chic boutique.
  • We gushed over the landing page.  There are so many great photos that work together as a cohesive whole.  The tagline is also very nice.
  • A customer knows right away they can shop on the site thanks to the cute shopping bag icon on the right.
  • The shop is easy to navigate.

Things we would tweak:

  • People respond to verbs better than nouns so we would recommend changing the ’boutique’ tab to ‘shop’.  We assumed the boutique tab would take us to a page where we would find the physical location of your shop that we could visit, complete with a Google map.
  • If a category is empty for a while, it’s generally best to remove it from the navigation bar in the shop.  Otherwise it looks like you have an empty store.
  • Your pet stuff is so cute!  Have you thought of photographing the bones with a dog to show them ‘in use’?  Most people don’t have their pet toys piled nicely in bins for more than a few moments after they give them to their pet.  Haha.
  • We loved the fact that you had an overview plus details in your product descriptions.  Some of the details are a bit confusing though since you don’t use the inch sigh (“).  One little line went: One size fits all.  L17.5.  Front waist 20, plus generous tie-backs.  Unless you do a lot of sewing (which we don’t), it’s a bit confusing how big your aprons actually are.
  • Your about page is really a place for you to shine so fully claim the honors due to you and gush in 1st person!  Also, we’d love to see you in action in your photo.  What does your studio look like?  What do you wear when you’re working?  Your photos are so small (or taken in your car) and we want to see you at your best and brightest.  🙂
  • One last little note: You have a link to your other business, jillMmarie photography.  When you tell people that photography is your original passion, they’re going to wonder why you started this other business in the first place if your heart isn’t in it.  Plus, you specialize in portraiture so you’re really narrowing the field of potential customers who come to your website and ALSO live in your area.

We hope this critique helps not only Jill of Whimsy Jill but you as well.  There’s never an end to the tiny tweaks you can make to your site to increase sales and make your customers happy. Please let us know below if this critique helped you with your site!
