When you work for yourself, cutting out the distractions and generating cash flow is a must. But there are so many distractions: email, Facebook, meetings, phone calls, people stopping by your office to talk, it’s endless.

If you let distractions get in the way, generating income and focusing with clear intention and direction on your life’s work becomes impossible and it begins to spill over into the rest of your life. End result: you become miserable at work and at home. Not good. Nobody wants to be that crazed woman who is pulling her hair out because, “There just isn’t enough time to get everything done!”

Did you know that after a distraction it takes 15 minutes to get back into whatever you are working on, to hit that sweet spot where you are cranking out great work. So think about how many times during the day you are distracted by something and how much time out of your day is being dictated by someone else’s agenda? WAY too often, right?

Here are three steps to help you cut out the distractions and get moving towards a huge month of revenue.

1) Goals – In order to be clear about where you want to go, you have to be clear about what you want to get accomplished. Go down your list of “to-dos” and double check. Does this activity move me closer, farther away, or have absolutely nothing to do with my goal? And by the way, your goal if you’re a business owner is to get your product or service into the world and earn a profit. Whether it is to improve your life or to improve the lives of others, the bottom line is that when your business is successful, so are all the lives your business touches. So think big and don’t back down from your goals. You are meant to be great. Be clear on that.

2) Distractions – Email, social media, phone calls, and interruptions are how other people let you know what they need and want. Set a specific amount of time for these activities, generally 30 minutes at the beginning of the day and 30 minutes at the end. Go through and respond to anything that is DIRECTLY related to YOUR goals. The rest can wait or be answered quickly. To the rest, say NO if it doesn’t line up with what you and your business is doing right now.

3) Outsourcing – If you are the owner of your business, chances are you have found yourself doing a lot of the back office work. But always remember you are the creative force behind your business. It is YOU that people are purchasing from, be it your product or your service. Make sure you are using your skills to move your business forward and by that I mean marketing and creativity. If you find you are bogged down with non-income producing activities like scheduling, billing, coordinating, it is time to start outsourcing so you can use your skills to market the pants off your product and get your creativity into the hands of your raving fans.

So be clear about what it is you are doing and what you want to accomplish. Cut out the distractions. Capitalize on your creative juices and outsource the rest. You will be unstoppable.
